Quebec-style Clay Oven
The Quebec-style clay oven was fired up for Day Camp in August as well as for a baking class in mid-July! Much appreciation to the enthusiastic, wonderful groups that gathered to learn about baking in the fur-trade manner!
"Indescribably delicious!" was the unanimous phrase spoken by boys and girls who made pizzas in the Clay Oven
during our 2010 Day Camp!
It was during the 2009 season that Forts Folle Avoine's Quebec-style Clay Oven was completed; volunteer Al Johnson and Forts Director Steve Wierschem worked hard to construct the oven with historical accuracy. A massive boulder foundation was put into place with truly back-breaking labor! Next, through equally challenging labor the framework of locally cut tag alders, along with fire brick and specially mixed Adobe-type clay, formed the Quebec-style clay oven.
By June 2009's Yellow River Echoes, the oven was ready! Enthusiastic tasters proclaimed the first loaf of bread "delicious!" Throughout that season the oven turned out loaf after loaf of "Al's Sourdough Bread" - that bread being particularly appreciated by participants of The Great Folle Avoine Fur Trade Rendezvous.
