Visitor Center
Winter Hours Tuesday through Friday - 10 am to 3 pm
New for the 2012 season the Visitor Center will display an exhibit celebrating Danbury Wisconsins 100 year Centennial.
At the present time visitors can view a captioned photographic journey entitled "A Sense of Place" covering the 1969 discovery of Fort Folle Avoine's archeological remains from the original early 1803-04 buildings and continuing through the reconstruction years of the 1970's and '80's.
A short walk from the Visitor Center is a self guided tour of the restored one-room Karlsborg School from 1887. There is no charge and the accurate re-creation of the classroom, along with photographs of other early Burnett County schools, has been enthusiastically enjoyed by visitors!
Yet another exhibit you'll want to see is the Ojibwe artifacts and history display that includes beautiful beaded items, tools, cradleboards, and other Native American items.
Extraordinary beaded war shirts from the late 1800's recently have been added to this exceptional collection.
Be sure to take time, too, to visit the Fur Trade Exhibit room. Here one can view a variety of archeological artifacts uncovered during excavation of the original fur trade site! On display are items from both the NorthWest and XY Companies. The fur trade exhibit displays a beaver top hat, clay pipes, trade beads, trade silver, tea bricks, tobacco twists, furs, tools, cooking utensils and more to offer visitors a vivid portrayal of fur-trade life along the Yellow River as it was right here some two hundred years ago!
In addition to these exhibits open to the public, the Visitor Center contains our Gift Shop, which offers publications, craft items, jewelry, and souvenirs with fur trade and Native American themes. Many consignment items made by local artists are available.
Tours of the Fur Trade Posts and the re-created Indian Village, given by period-dressed guides, are offered Wednesday through Sunday Memorial weekend through Labor Day weekend and Saturday and Sunday through September 10am to 3pm after which tours close for the season. Groups may schedule tours September and October by appointment, call or email.
